The
Colorado Watercolor Society is an organization dedicated to uphold the highest
standards and principles of art and to promote, encourage and foster an
interest in fine art in all media, especially watercolor.
Beginnings
The society was organized as an art group by Walter O. Green and his wife,
Olive, in October 1954 with the purpose of promoting all fine arts, especially
watermedia. The first President was Irma Greenawalt, 1954-1957, and it
held its first public exhibition at the Mile High Center of Denver in
1957. In 1968 CWS was incorporated and in 1995 a registered trademark
status was obtained for the CWS logo.
Activities.
The Society sponsors two annual juried shows, which include the State
Watermedia Exhibition at the Colorado History Museum and the Botanic Gardens
Show. In 1997 the CWS became a member of the Western Federation of Watercolor
Societies, thus allowing our members to enter its annual show. We shall
in turn host the WFS exhibition in the year 2007. Other shows are held
throughout the metro area and occasionally in other communities within
the State. A juror's workshop is held each year during the State Exhibition.
CWS is a 501 (c) (3) organization.
As a service to the community, the Society
donates to Foothills Art Center in Golden, and other worthy art-oriented
projects in the State. Each year some members donate paintings to the
Channel Six Auction. Members also supported Art for Healing Hearts which
raised money for the orphans of the Twin Towers tragedy.
Meetings
Meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the
First Plymouth Congregational Church, 3501 S. Colorado Boulevard, Englewood,
CO., except the months of July, August and December.
